“Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed before the king of Assyria, nor before all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles.” 2 Chron 32:7,8

These were the words of Hezekiah, King of Judah, to his people. The scene here is interesting because of the reality on the ground. Sennacherib, King of Assyria had a vast and strong army. He had shown is might in the past, by conquering and bringing into submission the many kingdoms around Judah. Lest the people of Judah forgot this fact, he sent messengers to go forth and remind them of his previous victories-he reminded them of how the other kingdoms had waited for their gods to deliver them to no avail.

But it is recorded that the threat, did little to dampen the spirit of King Hezekiah and his people-all because they knew well that their God was unlike the others. They had witnessed the hand of their God in the past and new well that no king could rise against him and survive. The story concludes with God sending an angel who cuts down every mighty man of valor, leader, and captain in the camp of the king of Assyria. King Sennacherib was not spared either-he gets killed by his own subject.

What a story!!! The truth is, if we trust our God and put all our hopes and dreams at his throne, no army can rise against us and survive. It does not matter what enemy we face, He is greater that any enemy we have faced or we yet to face. Let us learn to tell our problems how great our God is-King Hezekiah did it and succeeded. We also can. “Yes, we can.” Amen
