The medieval rabbis used to say that the arch sin is despair. The bible seems to be supporting this assertion. Rom 5:5 says,
“Now hope does not disappoint, because the Love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy spirit who was given to us.”
It may well go without saying that, to Christian, Hope should be “a future certainty grounded in a present reality”. The day to day victories that God enables us to conquer. We also have landmarks in the bible that we can turn to for assurance.
One such landmark is Israel’s release from bondage in Egypt and its deliverance at the Red Sea. Another such landmark is King Jehoshaphat’s victory over the people of Ammon, Moab and many others who had attacked his kingdom.
In all these cases, God’s hand was clearly present. The greatest landmark of course was Jesus Christ’s triumphant resurrection from that tomb. The list of landmarks is endless.
